The article is regarding Marine Cpl. Donald Mainland`s attempt to set a new ocean-to-ocean world`s bike record. His destination is New York City Hall which is 3000 miles away. He hopes to beat the 1949 record of 20-days, 7-hours and 29-minutes by at least 4-days. The official timer at the takeoff is Phil Mole Sr., director of the Amateur Bicycle League. Phil was also a renown bicycle racer & stuntman, and became owner of the John T. Bill Co, a major Distributor of bicycles, parts & accessories serving bicycle Dealers in CA, NV & AZ.
Holding Mainland on his bike for the start is Ernie Zamora who became the owner of Cycle & Sport Bike Shop of Santa Monica, CA. Ernie was well known for his expertise of racing & touring bicycles. Ernie & Phil Mole were both active in the Southern CA bicycle racing scene. See the picture gallery. |
