The World`s 1st Unicyclist |
This interesting article about a Unicycle performer of the 1800`s and early 1900`s is on the reverse side of a piece of music which is unrelated to bicycles or bicycling; it is a March composed by W.N. Merrick, Band Master of the Great Adam Forepaugh and Sells Brothers Enormous Shows United. Printed on the reverse side of the music is a full page article titled, `UNIQUE UNICYCLING, CAREER OF A MOST EXTRAORDINARY ATHLETE`. Albert H. Minting, aka `Minting the Marvel` who performed fantastic unicycle feats in England, Russia and on the European continent. In April 1901 he performed in the USA at The Madison Square Garden in New York. Minting was born in England in the 1800`s. His father was the first person to ever ride a unicycle. Ceramic Clown on Unicycle |
A ceramic piece of art; a hand painted clown riding on a unicycle. Clowns are always making fun and this one is no exception; when you see the reverse side, the clown is NOT actually riding the unicycles, he is balancing it with his knee on a large rock like object and his left-foot on the ground. Pettee Cycle`s Unicycle Seats |
A snip from the 1973 catalog of Pettee Cycle, a major distributor located in Denver, CO. Pettee imported Unicycles and Unicycle seats starting in the 1950`s. The model USH seats illustrated here were produced for Pettee and WCCSC by Taihei Industrial Co of Osaka, Japan. The letters USH stand for Unicycle Saddle Hayutin, because it was the idea of Irwin Hayutin (president of Pettee Cycle) to design and produce these seats. [Item# Pettee Unicycle.a] |

An advertisement published in the 1972 issue of American Bicyclist magazine, one of the popular trade magazines serving the bicycle industry. The American Flyer Unicycle shown here was produced for Pettee Cycle and WCCSC by Kofu Bicycle Co of Tokyo, Japan. Mr. Kitajima was the export manager at the time and if I recall correctly, the presidents name was Mr. Teramoto (he was a soft spoken gentleman with a passion for bicycles).
