| These two sets of bicycle rollers are no longer in my collection. Bicycle rollers were used for training, warm-up and indoor racing events; there would be two or more set up with competitors (without the supporting braces shown in this photo) and the competitors would ride for a specific amount of time, balancing the bike on the rollers. The judges would keep records of the distance ridden to determine the placement (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.). The frame is wood as are the slats on the three rollers (barrels). The belt is similar to a large-long o-ring. There are two of these in this collection (without the bike, Starlet or braces). A little history: Notice the stenciled text on the side of the wooden frame; `Atlas Cycle Co., 225 E 6th St., TU-2641 (the TU is for the phone prefix Turner). Atlas Cycle is the second bike shop my father purchased after we moved to Los Angeles from Minneapolis in 1946. The name was changed to Playrite Bicycle Supply Co. which was the name of our store at 168 N. La Brea Ave. Dad and Mom subsequently expanded the second store by acquiring the adjacent building so we then had double the space in 225 and 227 E. 6th St., which was in downtown L.A. between Los Angeles St. and Maple St. We sold several thousand bikes (new and rebuilt) and juvenile wheel goods (trikes, autos, tractors, etc.) per year from this location and the name was changed from Playrite to West Coast Cycle Supply Company (WCCSC) in the late 1950`s. This photo was taken by one of the Hollywood Movie Studios and loaned to Howie by Dan and Cheri LePro. The studio constructed the braces to support the bike so the actress and actor would not fall off the bike or ride off the rollers. The cyclists that used these rollers for training and/or racing would not have had the braces because their skill level was such that they were safe free-riding on the rollers. [Item# Rollers-002] |

| This is a NOS (New Old Stock) set of bicycle rollers. The quality of design and manufacturing is wonderful. The frame and rollers are wood. Notice the pillow blocks with zerk grease fittings. There are two handles attached to each end for ease when moving (I estimate the weight to be about 80 lbs.). The rollers are pictured here while on a cart so they are easy for me to move around.
