Porcelain Box - French, 18th Century |
In Europe during the middle of the eithteenth century, boxes realistically modeled and painted as fruits, flowers, fans, hearts, animals and other objects came into fashion. The fanciful shapes display the exuberance typical of the rococo spirt. Today such boxes are usually referred to as snuffoxes, patch boxes, and candy boxes. Like the original, this Rochard box is painted by hand (in Limoges, France) and fitted with metal mounts. It opens nicely at the bottom. A cute bear with a smirk on his face is pedaling the high wheel bike; there is a rear-facing basket on the frame above the rear wheel with a rear-facing baby bear holding on. The dimensions are 3 inches wide and 3 1/2 inches high. Kay purchased this from The Metropoliatan Museum of Art. [Item# TableTopDeco-002] |
