| Copper Art Rendition |
|
| | This copper art piece is a rendition of one of the antique bike posters from France advertising Falcon Bicycles. The artist, ELLS, was an employee at Safety Cycle which was located on north Western Ave. in Los Angeles. My recollection is that Ells was a fine and personal young man that immigrated to America from Israel; he was a valuable employee at the store. The dimensions are 13 x 17 3/4 inches, the frame and matting were also done by Ells. The backing board of the frame is cut out of a Schwinn bicycle box. A bit of history; Safety Cycle Bicycle Store was originally opened by George and his wife Shirley. Howie's parents (Leo Sr. and RosaBelle) had their bicycle store (Playrite) just a few miles away from Safety Cycle. George and Leo Sr. were bot Schwinn Dealers and friendly competitors; they would trade bikes and merchandise back and forth when necessary. In the 1960's or early 1970's Safety Cycle was sold to Art Simas who continued to build the business with his son, Greg. The Simas family were good and kind business people, as were their predecessors. They also had a retail shoe business in Santa Maria, CA. |
