The story of the Shimano family and Shimano Company is probably the best success story in the worldwide bicycle industry. The company has endured and succeeded through good times and bad. The book, History of Shimano (a copy of which is in the Everything Bicycles collection), published by Shimano Industrial Co., Ltd. in 1975, chronicals the company which was founded in the early 1920`s by Shozaburo Shimano (1894~1958). His three sons joined the company on an evolutionary schedule and they grew the struggling company into the largest bicycle component maker in the world. The sons are; (1) Shozo Shimano (1938~19??), Keizo Shimano (????~????) and Yoshizo `YOSHI` Shimano (born 1941 and current chairman). Third generation Shimano`s have continued the growth of the companies, they are; Yozo, Toyo & Kozo.
Shimano`s ZD (Zero Defects) program of the 1960`s & 1970`s greatly contributed to the high quality of the Shimano products. Shimano has earned the respect and admiration of many in the bicycle industry as well as in the manufacturing industry.
