Lorne Shields (vintage-antique2@rogers.com) was first introduced into the wholesale bicycle business at age 11 in 1954. This was in Toronto, Canada. His dad, Harry Shields, started to import & distribute some bicycle parts and accessories from England and Germany. In 1963 Lorne went to work for his dad full time. The name of the company was HARRY D. SHIELDS LIMITED. Location at the time was a 2nd floor walk up with a pulley system elevator at 56 Jarvis St.. In about 1966 Lorne was managing the company as his father became involved in another family company, Score Sporting Goods which became SHIELDS SPORTSWEAR. In about 1968 HARRY D. SHIELDS LIMITED moved to 93 Spadina Ave. Growth was consistent but slow. The main competitor at the time was CCM (Canada Cycle & Motor). A few years later Lorne moved the company to 401 Richmond St. West in Toronto and started to trade under the name SHIELDS. It was at the Richmond St. address that SHIELDS again began to import a bicycles. At first it was some High Risers from Juniorwerke in Austria. Going to Austria to see the factory was Lorne`s first overseas trip; he wanted to see how a factory could sell a complete high rise bicycle for about $10. Lorne thought it was a scam but learned that it wasn`t and a few containers were ordered. Then the company started to buy some bikes from Peugeot in France. Growth was phenomenal. The 10 speed craze hit. At that time CCM started to loose some market share thus opening a huge hole for SHIELDS to grow in the Parts & Accessory field. In 1973 SHIELDS moved to a 60,000 sq. ft. premises in the suburbs; they continued to import bikes from Europe but then Japan and Taiwan came into the market with competitive bikes. SHIELDS imported bikes from KAWAMURA (Nishiki).  The communications between SHIELDS and West Coast Cycle at the time is what precipitated the meeting between Lorne and Howie Cohen; the two of them had much in common and their friendship flourished, they were both young and aggressive. They both LOVED antique bicycles and were involved in the wholesale bike trade albeit in different countries. They both collected every aspect of early cycling including vintage photos, posters, ephemera and memorabilia. In 1981 Lorne established his private company called SHIELDS INTERTRADE. He sold that company in 1995 and has been retired ever since. Lorne currently oversees a family property and does a lot of charity work. In his spare time he still collects, does research and studies early cycling. All of Lorne`s businesses were located in and around the Toronto Canada area; he has made many friends in the wholesale business and still corresponds with many of the `olde tymers`. One of the finest of friends that has passed away was Stuart Meyers of The American Bicyclist Magazine. Stuart honored Lorne with the responsibility of maintaining the photographic archive of the American Bicyclist Magazine which Lorne does and cherishes. Lorne`s oldest memory in the business was in 1954 when he held a box of Sturmey Archer 3 Speed Indicator Chains in his hand. The contents felt so nice, he did not know what they were but he was hooked!
    Some history about Lorne`s collections:
Lorne began collecting early cycles, bicycles, related memorabilia and ephemera in about 1967. This at a time when most antique dealers and collectors believed it had no merit. Through his determination and enthusiasm he has preserved an important part of history and built one of the world`s finest collections related to early cycling history. In 1981, he donated the largest portion of his bicycle collection to the Canadian National Museum of Science & Technology in Ottawa where his generous donation forms the core of an important holding. It is one of two collections named after a living (so far) donor and is known as THE SHIELDS COLLECTION. Two additional major donations followed.
Lorne, a Toronto native, has been an avid collector since first acquiring stamps at age eight and subsequently other items such as coins, art, Victoriana, glass, clocks, etc. all of which gave him an understanding of what and how to collect. His collection spans from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Special collections within his collection are Prints, Lithography, Books and Ephemera, Manuscript Material, Hobby Horse items, Clocks and Watches, Catalogs, Photography, Jewelry, Art, Warning devices (Horns, Bells & Whistles) and just about anything else you can think of relative to historic cycling. He has lectured widely on the history of bicycle photography showcasing his own diverse collection of images. He has spoken twice on the subject to The Photographic Historical Society of Canada. Some of Shields` collection has been on display at the Smithsonian Institution, Royal Ontario Museum, and Museé d`Art et Industrie in St. Etienne, France. He has presented papers related to early cycling history in The Netherlands and various venues in Canada and the USA.
Lorne and Howie have been good friends since the early 1970`s and Lorne has provided Howie with many of the items in this collection and continues to assist Howie with information whenever asked.
