New Departure Coaster Brakes were invented by Harry Townsend (born July 18, 1875, passed away at age 67 in 1942) & the Rockwell brothers (Albert & Edward) while they were employed by the New Departure Manufacturing Company. Mr. A.C. Hitchcock was known as one of the outstanding persons of the American Bicycle Industry in the 1940`s and prior.
Some of the employees of New Departure were: Mr. Endee Ellis-sales, Mr. George Chenoweth-west coast representative...
New Departure produced coaster brakes, front & rear hubs, and supplied spare parts to the trade through distributors. Although they were most famous for their coaster brakes and hubs, they also produced bells in the early years. My earliest catalog for New Departure is from 1914. Mattatuck acquired New Departure sometime in the late 1950`s or early 1960`s.
