Julio Marquevich (1926~1999) immigrated to the USA from Buenos Aires, Argentina in June of 1964. He spoke very little, to no English at the time as his native language was Spanish. While in Argentina Julio was the owner of a large automobile parts distributorship for General Motors. The currency of Argentina collapsed twice while his company owed a great amount of US Dollars which forced the sale of the company. Julio, his lovely & genteel wife Nelly (1928~2004) and three (3) children, Patricia, Gustavo (`Gus`) and Gabriel (`Gaby`) moved to a new city in a new country without having any prospects for work and without a command of the English language. One of Julio’s first jobs was with an automotive parts dealer in Los Angeles, Calif. Julio started by doing janitorial work like cleaning the restrooms and working the sales counter to Spanish speaking customers as he already knew the products. After one year, his English improved and he got his start in the bicycle industry working with a bicycle distributorship named WCCSC (Howie`s family company, West Coast Cycle Supply Co,). Julio’s splendid personality and salesmanship ability soon earned him the position of inside sales and ultimately he became one of the company’s best salesmen. After a few years on the road, he became Sales Manager of WCCSC & BPDI (Bicycle Products Development Inc) a WCCSC subsidiary. His bicycle career flourished at WCCSC, he advanced to become an executive at Western States Imports  (WSI), and then on to Shimano Sales Co and then on to be President Campagnolo USA.
Julio & Howie
retained a warm association throughout the many years until Julio passed away IN 1999, as did his wife Nelly IN 2004, who was stricken with MS.
Julio’s elder son Gustavo has enjoyed several positions within the bicycle industry since 1971. He is presently International Sales Manager at Kryptonite-Ingersoll Rand Portable Security. I lost contact with Gustavo, Gaby & Patricia over the years but with the assistance of my son, Howie Jr., Gustavo & Patricia recently contacted me and added much of the details of this bio of their father.
The picture shown here is cropped from a larger group picture which was taken in Ensenada, Mexico at the store of Palacio de la Bicicletta, owned by Gilibaldo & Carmen Teran. The large group consisted of many of our Japanese suppliers, WCCSC staff and other distributors for American Eagle bicycles. Julio is shown holding a glass of refreshment. In front & to the right is the Teran`s daughter. Behind Julio in a white shirt with dark rimmed glasses is Myles Hayutin of Pettee Cycle-Denver. On the left side of the photo is Mrs Kei Kawai, wife of Junzo Kawai of SunTour-Maeda Industries. I have some better photos of Julio which I will post in the near future. Additional pictures and text pending.
