The Paris-Rouen was the first cycle race covering a distance between two cities. It was held between the cities of Paris and Rouen on November 7, 1869. The winner of the inaugural Paris-Rouen race was an Englishman living in Paris, James Moore, who rode the 123 kilometers in 10 hours-40 minutes, including time spent walking his Boneshaker (Velocipede) up the steeper hills. Mr. M.Lamon arrived in 14th place. 32 of the 120 starters finished the race including an American woman, `TRICYCLE TISSIER`, who captured 26th place overall (12h 10` behind Moore). The race was organized by a bicycle magazine, LE VELOCIPEDE ILLUSTRE and the Oliver brothers, owners of the Michaux Co. First prize was 1000 gold francs and a bicycle. |
