1899 Catalogue, Schwinn (Arnold) and Co on West Lake St., Chicago (Original, not a reprint) |
|
| A PROFESSIONALLY REPRODUCED REPRINT IS AVAILABLE TO SELL! THE PRINTER REPRODUCED THIS CATALOG IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT IS DIFFICULT TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ORIGINAL AND REPRODUCTION. Notice that the chainring is on the left side of the bike on the front-outside-cover (this is a fairly common mistake done within the bicycle industry on catalogues and photos published in magazines-the negative was reversed during the printing process). When compared to the Victor 1899 catalog sheet (not Overman), you will see that the two bicycles, Schwinn & Victor, look amazingly alike. It is possible that one of the two companies produced the branded bicycle for the other company. This is the Arnold, Schwinn & Co 16-page catalogue illustrating the component parts, frame construction and bicycles of the year 1899. Schwinn first introduced bicycles to the world in 1895. The condition of the original is fair, the dimensions of the original are 6 x 8 inches, the reproduction also measures 6 x 8 inches, photo #171-01. A LITTLE HISTORY; Until the early 1980`s, the name Schwinn was synonymous with bicycles; the company had earned the respect and admiration of the bicycling community and the entire USA bicycle industry. Schwinn quality was the goal that many bicycle brands selling to the IBD`s (Independent Bicycle Dealers) aspired to reach. In the late 1940`s & early 1950`s Howie`s family owned a bike shop in Los Angeles named Playrite Bicycle Supply Co., located at 168 N. LaBrea Ave. We were an Authorized Schwinn Dealer and enjoyed doing business with the local Schwinn Distributor, Harry Wilson Sales and the representatives of the Schwinn factory.
