Frank J. Berto was born in 1929 and has been a cyclist and involved with cycling for most of his life. In addition to being an accomplished bicyclist, Frank has written more than 100 articles for Bicycling and many other publications. He also authored several interesting and popular books including; Complete Guide to Upgrading Your Bike, The Dancing Chain and The Birth of Dirt. Frank was the organizer of the 11th International Cycling Conference which was held in Osaka, Sakai, Japan and hosted by Shimano. Frank has an important collection of derailleurs that he has accumulated over the years. As of the year 2010, Frank is still active in the bicycling community and is an expert in the field of mechanical engineering. This 1996 picture is of Frank together with three other bicycle historians who were contributing authors of The Dancing Chain, (L to R) Walter Ulreich of Austria, Raymond Henry, Frank Berto, and Ron Shepherd of Australia.
