| | A large size (48 x 26 inch) fabric banner that was distributed to retail bicycle stores that stocked and sold American Eagle brand bicycles in the 1960s. A little history: The American Eagle line of bicycles was the first high quality bicycle exported from Japan. the line was designed jointly by West Coast Cycle (WCC) and KAWAMURA SANGYO CO. Howie made countless trips to Japan and spent weeks on end at the Kawamura factory and at many of the component parts makers. Mr. Yukio Kawamura (aka Hige-san) decided that his company would endeavor to produce bicycles that were of equal or better quality than any bicycles produced worldwide. WCC air shipped to Japan 15 of the most popular and high quality bikes produced in the USA, England, France & Italy. The Kawamura staff studied the samples and developed the frames & forks which were equal to or better then the samples. Kawamura`s engineers worked closely with the engineers & management of the many various component manufacturers and ultimately succeeded to supply bicycles that bicycle dealers and consumers desired. WCC was proud to have played this important role in the bicycle industry. Notice the words KB BICYCLES on the banner; they signify Kawamura Built Bicycles which were of the highest quality available. The tri-color square in the center of the head badge has a special meaning; RED = Passion for our customers, YELLOW = well designed products, and BLUE = sincerity in doing business. The brand name American Eagle was changed to NISHIKI in the late 1960s; that is another story. |
